The role

Job description

Markage is looking for a Software Engineer to join our Canadian team in an on-site role based in Calgary, Vancouver, or Toronto. This role focuses on building reliable software systems, services, integrations, and product features. You will design and implement production software, work through technical trade-offs, collaborate across product and engineering, and maintain quality through testing, review, observability, documentation, and responsible release practices. You will work with product managers, software engineers, front-end developers, designers, QA, infrastructure teams, and business stakeholders. Clear communication, reliable follow-through, and careful work are expected. AI-assisted tools may be used for technical research, code documentation, test planning, debugging, incident summaries, and engineering workflow support. All AI-assisted work must be reviewed for accuracy, relevance, confidentiality, and fit before it is shared or used.

Essential duties

  • Design, build, test, and maintain production software features, services, APIs, and integrations.
  • Translate product and technical requirements into clear implementation plans and maintainable code.
  • Participate in architecture decisions, code reviews, testing, release planning, and technical documentation.
  • Diagnose defects, performance problems, integration failures, and production incidents.
  • Work with databases, APIs, services, queues, cloud platforms, or other systems appropriate to the product.
  • Apply secure coding, data-protection, reliability, and observability practices appropriate to the system.
  • Improve existing code through refactoring, testing, automation, and removal of avoidable complexity.
  • Collaborate with product and design teams to resolve technical constraints and clarify requirements.
  • Support releases and production operations, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and follow-up improvements.
  • Document important technical decisions, interfaces, dependencies, and operational expectations.

Essential requirements

  • Professional software-development experience with production systems.
  • Strong programming capability in at least one language used for modern application or service development.
  • Working knowledge of software design, APIs, databases, testing, source control, and deployment practices.
  • Ability to reason about reliability, security, maintainability, and performance trade-offs.
  • Holds a valid Dex Professional Specialist Certification (DEX-PSP) in the Information Technology domain.

Preferred qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with cloud services, distributed systems, CI/CD, containers, or infrastructure automation.
  • Experience with high-scale, regulated, security-sensitive, or integration-heavy systems.
